“There is a definition of being open to ideas, and being welcoming and inclusive, which is how I would define a liberal point of view. The race between Omar and Kelliher, Omar told The Intercept in an interview last month, rested on what it means to be a true progressive. The 5th District is the bluest in Minnesota and one of the most progressive in America, and the candidates’ platforms all included the stable of progressive policy priorities like “Medicare for All,” tuition-free college, and abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Tlaib and Omar are the nominees in solidly Democratic districts, and they are expected to be the first Muslim women in Congress. Over the weekend, Tlaib, fresh off her primary victory in Michigan’s 13th District, traveled to Minnesota to get out the vote for Omar. She was backed in recent weeks by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib, insurgent Democratic nominees in New York and Michigan House districts, respectively. Omar ran a strong ground game, employing the strategies she used in her 2016 state legislative primary that led to a 37 percent increase in voter turnout as compared to the 2014 primary. Voter turnout was especially critical in the Minneapolis district the seat was expected to be uncontested until June 5, when its current occupant, Ellison, jumped into the race for attorney general. Patricia Torres Ray, who came in third with 13 percent. The election was widely viewed as a three-way contest between Omar, Kelliher, and state Sen. By contrast, in 2016, about 44,000 voters participated in the district’s Democratic primary, and 362,000 voted in the general election. Out of some 130,000 ballots cast, Omar went home with more than 62,000 to Kelliher’s 39,000, with just a few precincts left to count. Keith Ellison, meanwhile, handily won the nomination to replace Swanson as state attorney general, despite facing last-minute allegations of abuse from his former partner, Karen Monahan, which Ellison denied.Ī record number of voters cast ballots in the primary in the 5th District, which includes all of Minneapolis. Tim Walz - who secured the nomination - and Erin Murphy, a progressive who finished surprisingly strong. Ilhan Omar scored a convincing victory in the state’s 5th Congressional District on Tuesday night, emerging with a nearly 18-point win over former House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher.Īttorney General Lori Swanson, after leading in polls for the Democratic nomination, lost badly, finishing third behind U.S. He’s likely to be the favorite over Johnson, bolstering Democrats’ hopes of holding onto the governorship of this increasingly purple state.Minnesota state Rep. Walz, meanwhile, seemed to benefit from a consolidation of anti-Swanson voters. Swanson had antagonized Democratic progressives for years, and was hit by a late-breaking series of scandals involving alleged misuse of state property and personnel for electioneering. Democratic front-runner and Attorney General Lori Swanson finished a poor third behind state legislator Erin Murphy and the winner, U.S. Pawlenty wasn’t the only gubernatorial candidate to have a shockingly bad night, though. In the end Pawlenty again turned out to be a better candidate on paper than on the campaign trail. He also reminded Trump-loving GOP voters that TPaw called POTUS “unsound, uninformed, unhinged, and unfit to be president of the United States” while withdrawing his support from the GOP nominee after the Access Hollywood video came out in October of 2016. Johnson played the underdog well, scoring points over Pawlenty’s post-presidential-campaign career as a D.C.-based bank lobbyist. Sparse polling showed him comfortably in the lead.īut then on Tuesday night, he lost. Perhaps drawing on his experience in Iowa, he did not pursue the endorsement of the conservative-activist–dominated state party, and instead attempted to drown his primary opponent, 2014 gubernatorial nominee and local government official Jeff Johnson, in a sea of name identification and money (he was outspending Johnson by a ten-to-one margin as of June). Having embodied a political version of the Peter Principle (holding that most people eventually rise to a level where they become incompetent), Pawlenty went back to his comfort zone and announced a third gubernatorial run. Before long, there are so many of the species that it’s clear they’re working in unison. Scientists have found that the more individuals there are participating, the more in tune the insects get. Instinctively, when hundreds of insects grow to be thousands - each appearing to light the one next to it, like a candle being passed - the crowd stands.įor a while, the insects’ rhythms remain a bit discordant, like that of an orchestra warming up. But, as their numbers grow, expectant murmurs travel up and down the row of spectators. When the first synchronous fireflies appear, sporadically flashing, they don’t seem, to my untrained eye, to be much different from common species that illuminate backyards across the country. John Caveny, a natural resource management specialist for the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation, brings his family along to observe fireflies. Tonight, I’m hoping to break the spell that screens have cast. In a time of global confusion, I’ve been trying to find answers that do not exist, and the process has only served to disrupt my animal instincts. For several seasons now, I’ve been beating myself against screens like a moth against a lightbulb, seeking entertainment that might numb me, news that might comfort me. In a sustained state of hypervigilance, I’ve fallen under the influence of phones, tablets and computers. Since the initial covid shutdown, I’ve stayed up too late, acting as if the light of screens might stave off doom. It’s as if we, as a species, have grown afraid of the dark. Internationally, artificial light pollution is growing at a rate of 2 percent a year with no signs of slowing. According to the International Dark-Sky Association, 99 percent of people in the United States don’t have access to natural night anymore, the blinking sun-and-moon patterns with which we evolved. I’m seeking fireflies’ bioluminescence, or living light, mainly because I’ve been spending too much time basking in the artificial illumination of screens. And it doesn’t feel like we’ve figured out, as a society, how to reckon with the magnitude of what we’ve been through. Even mundane errands have, throughout the pandemic, required abstract risk assessments. It’s been hard to know what to do for a long time running. It’s hard to know what to do, know what I mean?” “People aren’t wearing masks here like they are in Michigan. The woman, visiting from Michigan, empathizes. I explain to the woman that I’d dipped down to the river for a brief respite from the crowd. But, even with these limitations, the annual gathering isn’t a small one. Years ago, the National Park Service instituted a lottery for people to secure passes, since the species’ growing popularity raised concerns about conservation. The firefly event in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which straddles this section of Tennessee and my home state of North Carolina, draws seekers from across the continent. Given that the synchronous fireflies of Elkmont are some of the most famous fireflies in the world - and that I live in their home region of southern Appalachia - coming across the study during lockdown made me think it was past time to see these brilliant creatures.Ī synchronous firefly in western North Carolina. Researchers found that, globally, 1 million people travel to witness firefly-related phenomena every year. This year, Tufts University released the first-ever comprehensive study of firefly tourism. Remnants of the former human settlement - some of which has been lost to the elements - are visible everywhere, scattered among river-rounded stones and beds of fern. To reach a trailhead in an area of the park known as Elkmont, we - along with hundreds of other visitors here to witness the synchronous fireflies’ light show, which generally occurs in a two-week period around early June - had to walk through an avenue of mountain cabins, abandoned after the park was formed. And there’s a chimney nearby, but no house. The woman is sitting on a porch stoop, but there’s no porch. It does feel like we’ve traveled through a portal to another realm. This happens even though the brain is not equipped to permanently store each individual experience about a specific moment in space and time – the hallmark of episodic memory that is also lost in adult amnesia. What might be happening, Turk-Browne said, is that as a baby gains experience in the world, their brain searches for general patterns that help them understand and predict the surrounding environment. After the babies were shown these two sets of images several times, the hippocampus responded more strongly to the structured image set than to the random image set. In the other, images appeared in a random order that offered no opportunity for learning. One set of images appeared as a structured sequence containing hidden patterns that could be learned. “A fundamental mystery about human nature is that we remember almost nothing from birth through early childhood, yet we learn so much critical information during that time - our first language, how to walk, objects and foods, and social bonds,” said Nick Turk-Browne, a professor of psychology at Yale and senior author of the paper.įor the new study, the Yale team used a new functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technology to capture activity in the hippocampus in 17 babies, aged three months to two years old, as they were presented two sets of images on a screen. The findings were published May 21 in the journal Current Biology. However, a new brain imaging study by Yale scientists shows that infants as young as three months are already enlisting the hippocampus to recognize and learn patterns. Many scientists have attributed this so-called “infantile amnesia” to a lack of development in the hippocampus, an area of the brain located in the temporal lobe that is crucial to encoding memory. One trait shared by all humans is that they don’t remember specific life episodes that occurred before the age of 3 or 4. Now tape your cut-out to that edge of the square (facing outward).įinally, all you need to do now is repeat the last step for your remaining squares of paper. Then rotate the square by 90 degrees so that the flat and uncut side is facing you. Now, you need to take one of your squares and cut out the traced shape. Repeat this process for the three square sheets of paper that you have left, and make sure that the cut-out is facing the same way each time.Īt the end of this process, you should have your original cut-out and four additional pieces of paper with your shape drawn onto them. Make sure to carefully line up the edges and then trace around the shape using a pencil. Next, you need to line your cut-out shape up with another square of paper. This is to make sure that the next steps work. T is important to note that if you start cutting your shape at the bottom of the paper, then you will need to finish cutting at the bottom of the paper. You will need a pencil, five squares of paper that are the same size, and a pair of scissors for this task.įirst, you will need to take one of your pieces of paper and cut a shape out of one side of it. This is a great cutting version for beginners that is easy and simple to follow. If you are feeling really confident about drawing tessellations, then it might be time to move on to cutting tessellations. Instead, work with the entire blank page to create your design. When you feel that you have mastered this way of creating tessellations and need something a bit more challenging, repeat this entire process without creating rows and columns to work within. When you have finished drawing the shapes, if you want to take things one step further, you can color in the different shapes in different colors. If everything is going to plan, then you can keep drawing until you have covered the entire page. If the shapes don’t match up at any point, you can start again on a fresh piece of paper. Then you can draw your third shape and keep going until you have filled the row. These shapes need to fit next to each other with no space in between them. This can be any shape you want, but you could use a square, rectangle, or triangle if you are stuck for ideas.Īfter you have finished drawing your first shape, you need to repeat it again with the exact same dimensions as the first one. Next, in the first row, draw a simple shape that covers the entire row. You can measure equal rows with a ruler and draw lines across the page to do this. Start by dividing the paper into three rows or columns. Drawing a Simple Tessellationįor this tessellation, you will need a pencil, a ruler, and a piece of paper. If you have never created a tessellation before, it is better to start with the basics.Ī simple tessellation is easier to create and will be less complicated when you translate it to paper. There are nine types of semi-regular tessellations, and an example of one is when you combine two hexagons with two equilateral triangles. This number can also be divided from 180 because 180 fits evenly into 720 if you were to times it by 4.Ī semi-regular tessellation is formed when two or three different types of polygons share a common vertex (a corner point). The same can be said for a hexagon, which has six angles, and the angles of this shape equal 720 degrees. A triangle, for instance, has three angles that equal 180 degrees, which can be divided from 360. This type of tessellation has interior angles that are split from 360 degrees. For this, you can use either rectangle, square, or hexagon shapes. Regular tessellations are tile patterns that are made up of just one single shape that is repeated to make a pattern. There are certain factors for each one that makes them all slightly different. These are regular and semi-regular tessellations. There are lots of different types of tessellations, but for the basics, there are two main types. Overall, installing Windows on your Mac is easier than it might seem You need a valid Windows product key: To activate Windows after installation, you'll need a valid product key for the version of Windows you want to install. The assistant will guide you through the process of partitioning your hard drive, creating a bootable USB drive of Windows and installing the operating system on your Mac.Before you start, there are a few things you should keep in mind: Backup your important data: Partitioning your hard drive can potentially cause data loss. It's important to back up any important files before you start the process. You need enough space on your hard drive: While you can adjust the size of the partition using Boot Camp Assistant, you'll need enough free space on your hard drive to accommodate both operating systems. To open it, go to Applications > Utilities > Boot Camp Assistant You can either purchase a copy from Microsoft or use a Windows installation disc that you already own.Once you have the installation media, you'll need to use Apple's Boot Camp Assistant to create a partition on your Mac's hard drive and install Windows on it.Boot Camp Assistant comes pre-installed on all Macs running Mac OS X 10.5 or later. The first step is to download a copy of the Windows operating system While it might sound intimidating, the process is actually quite simple. Of course, your publisher knows what those early cheapo books by current bestsellers went for originally, and what they resold for. Come the 1970s he sold ’em for, I think, $100,000 US apiece-and the final time he sold them he got something like a million dollars US for these three books that had originally gone for $1,500 US total.) (For example, Isaac Asimov sold the Foundation Trilogy for $500 US apiece in the early 1950s-and didn’t get paid, either. The publisher’s not doing a damned thing with it, so why not get it reverted? It may take you years to resell it, but at least it’s your property again, and if you hit it big, that $4,000 US novel might be worth even more the second time around. Now, from your point of view, this makes sense. If the book is, say, a year old, and out of print, you have every right to ask for an early reversion, and if it’s five years old (pretty much the industry standard except for Zebra/Kensington, which has a more onerous clause), you have every right to demand one. The clause says, in essence, that if your book goes out of print in X number of years, you can get it back at (or after) that time by writing the publisher a registered letter demanding that he bring it back into print, and he’s got six months to do it or the book reverts to you. Unless it’s a term-of-lease deal-and if you’re new enough not to know the term “indefinitely out of stock,” you’re too new to have enough clout to swing a term-of-lease contract-there is a reversion clause. To understand why, let’s take a look at your contract. QUESTION: I tried to order more copies of my book through my local bookstore, and they were told that it’s “indefinitely out of stock.” What does that mean?ĪNSWER: It means the publisher is jerking you around with an industry-wide ploy. Okay, let’s get on to this issue’s questions. Update: Make that eleven books and three stories. But I’ve optioned seven books since then. Sometimes it’s the truth usually it’s a lie. I invariably tell them that I don’t know the status of the book they’re asking about, that other producers are currently talking to my agent about that very same book, and I have no idea if an option contract is in the works or not. I have been approached by a number of producers since that day. But if they can’t raise the money, you won’t see a penny of option money.”Īnd, sure enough, I never heard from them again. If they make the deal, which is a one-in-a-thousand proposition, you’ll get a lot of money. Now they’ll take it around and try to make a deal, with the comforting knowledge that no one else is going to ace them out of it. Sure, they picked up a $100 lunch check and a pair of $300 airfares, but they saved a renewable $10,000 option payment. “When you told them the book hadn’t had any Hollywood interest in three years, you as much as gave them a free option. And I mentioned, in passing, that I had commended them on their taste, for I always thought the book could make a pretty nice movie and yet no production companies had expressed any interest in it since its publication three years earlier. I was really flying high when I got home, and I called my friend, Barry Malzberg, to tell him about it. They spent the next couple of hours feeding me, praising my writing, and telling me how much they wanted to make the movie. He flew into Cincinnati with his director, and they met me at La Maisonette, our pricey five-star restaurant. One day, in early 1990, I got a phone call out of the blue from a producer who wanted to option my fantasy novel, Stalking the Unicorn. So I’m going to help you learn by sharing a major blunder I made six years ago. You learn by spotting the mistakes in Roger Lee Vernon and George Allan England and avoiding them. You don’t become a good writer by emulating Nikos Kazantzakis or Edward Whittemore, because if their art could be emulated we’d all be doing it. You don’t learn from people’s successes you learn from their mistakes. To call horse you need to use both hands - holding E for few sec and then press arrow and similar lol. Dont know if they are "soul like" but playing "game of the year for 2022" my hand get hurt by constantly pulling down with mouse as controls are soo bad that you have hard time to see floor as game move avatar view up as you walking. Like log in, do meat run, make gigas and carchas mating, put eggs in incubator and log off nothing else to do.ītw i played many other games like lineage 2 in time it was on subscription but after few years ncsoft changed it inti free to play (pay to win + loot boxes and other gambling), i played also tera, lost ark and many single player games too. Only way to gain xp is killing thousands giga and carcha babies and that is boring too. I come to that level by doing boring nonsense. Lol it is game of the year for 2022 if you cant play it yet everyone else can.stick to ark 1 i guess XD Overall, I thing the game is too far off release to even bother speculating without at least seeing a lot of actual gameplay footage That way it still allows for that new combat system but also keeps that immersion factor during exploration and cave combat intact.Īnyways, I suspect one of the big reasons for the long delays might be down to feedback they're getting from whatever alpha version they're testing, so who knows if they end up changing the design before release. Overall, in my opinion at least, it would have been better to keep it in 1st person and only go to 3rd person when you equip a hand to hand weapon (in a similar way to when you ride a dino it switches over). Now for exploring a world, 1rst person is certainly much more immersive. 3rd person also makes character customisation a much more enjoyable worthwhile thing for the player because your character is always visible on screen, whereas in 1st person it's pretty much irrelevant. Something like HZD has a great mix of both. 3rd person works better for hand to hand combat, while first person works better for ranged combat. I do think for all intends and purposes it will be a totally different game, which is a risk of course.Īs for the choice to make it locked in 3rd person it has it's pro and cons and depends highly on the mechanics. It's really impossible to tell without seeing the actual gameplay to at least get a sense of it. |
